Tips and Tricks for Searching in IEEE Xplore Digital Library

Are you looking to keep up to date on the latest advances in technology: where do you go? I recommend trying out IEEE Xplore Digital Library in the LRC’s electronic databases. The beauty of electronic databases is the ease of access to up to date information quickly in one place. Unlike physical books that can quickly become outdated once printed, the IEEE Xplore Digital Library is always evolving.

IEEE is the “world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology,” and their database reflects their collections of journals, transactions, letters, magazines, conference proceedings, journals and standards.

Using your college student ID and pin number, you can access thousands of those journals, conference papers, and magazine articles.  You can do your own searching:

Or if you are a visual person, try out the “Top Searches and Documents” method of browsing:

Pro Tips

  • Always filter your search results by “My Subscribed Content” to make sure you have full access to the articles.
  • You can find out the impact of the article underneath the author’s names when you click on the article.  IEEE will show how many times other authors have cited the article in their papers, if there are patent citations, and how many times an article has been accessed.  Impact information can help you decide if the article is a good choice to reference in your paper.
  • The best feature of access to IEEE is the PDF version of the article you can download to make reading a breeze. You prefer to print the article or download it onto your favourite mobile device to read on the go.

So get started today and don't forget to drop by the LRC on your campus if you would like some hands on help! Til next time, Amanda @ the LRC
