Welcome to our series, "Getting to Know your LRC Staff", where we ask some hard hitting questions of your LRC staff. We say, hard hitting but we all know these are softball questions. So let's get started!

Headshot of Amanda Garbe
Can you introduce yourself?

Hi, my name is Amanda. I am the newest addition to the LRC family. I work as the Library Clerk at the Timmins Campus. If you need a book, laptop, or to release a print job, you have probably talked to me at the front desk.  I have a Library Technician diploma from Mohawk College and a Bachelor of Arts in Languages from the University of North Carolina.  Previously, I have worked at the Kitchener, Waterloo and Chatham-Kent Public libraries before joining up with the Northern College team.

What are you passionate about?

Learning. Yes, I know that sounds like a nerdy answer. But I love learning about new topics, delving into research, picking up a new skill, and hearing about other people’s learning journeys.

What is your favourite hobby?

You might as well as ask me to pick a single star out of the sky! I’m an artist, puppeteer, maker, tinkerer, video gamer, avid reader, role player, canner and cook, Lego sorter, and the list goes on and on. If there is an art form out there, I have probably dabbled in it. But paper art is my favourite if I had to pick just one medium. Here is one of the last flowers I made:

What is your favourite fiction book?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I get caught up in the glorious narratives nested within mythologies and more narratives. Patrick weaves a complex story about a gifted wizard Kvothe, which always leaves me yearning for the final book in the series. I am hoping one day I will finally get to read that book. I am looking at you, Patrick!

What is your favourite nonfiction book?

I don’t think I have one right now. I love to read memoirs! My nonfiction habits lately range from preserving and canning to art and making. Some of the last nonfiction books I have read were Every Tool’s A Hammer by Adam Savage and The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer.

What is one fun fact about you?

To raise money for Child’s Play, I played Borderlands for 24 hours straight and helped organize the event. It meant I was up for 36 hours straight during the event weekend. I was ready for bed by the time we finished, but it gave me some amazing memories while helping to raise funds for toys for sick kids in hospitals. It’s a great charity, and I recommend checking them out here.

What is your favourite part about libraries?

The people. I get to meet so many different people every day and help them. I never know what people will ask me. Every day can be a rollercoaster of research, thinking through problems or offering someone a tissue when they are struggling. I also get to share in student’s happy moments of success and see them grow in their chosen professions.
