Frequently Asked Questions About Tutoring

Can my friend tutor me?

The tutor-student relationship is different from a friend relationship. We have found it's best not to match friends up for peer tutoring. If you  want, you can make your own arrangements with your friend to have them tutor you outside the peer tutoring program.

I need a job. Can I be a tutor?

You can be a tutor if you have strong knowledge in the class(es) you want to tutor in. Tutoring isn’t a job to take only because you need money.

I missed a bunch of classes. Can I use a tutor to catch up?

Tutors are not teachers. They cannot teach you the material. If you missed classes, speak with your teacher. Tutors are there to help students who regularly attend classes and still struggle to grasp some of the materials.

I have an assignment due. Can I use a tutor?

If you have trouble understanding the assignment, yes, you can use a tutor. Keep in mind that if we don't already have a tutor for that subject, it can take time to find one. You also need to show that you have tried to work through the assignment on your own. The tutor will not do the whole assignment with you. They will work with you help you figure out where you are stuck and help you gain understanding so you can finish the assignment.

I don't want anyone to know I'm using a tutor.

Accessing tutoring services is confidential. The tutors sign a confidentiality agreement prohibiting them from discussing the students they work with.
