Work Permit

Refer to your Letter of Acceptance to learn if you need a co-op work permit. Click HERE to apply online.

The Government of Canada has set the following conditions for study/work permits:

  1. Your permit does not allow you to take unscheduled breaks from your studies. If that happens, you won’t be eligible for a post-graduate work permit.
  2. You can apply for a Social Insurance Number when you arrive; you will need one to work in Canada.
  3. You may only work part-time while on a study permit – up to twenty hours per week while school is in session.
  4. You may work more hours during scheduled school breaks.
  5. Your study permit will state any other specific working conditions.

Some college programs include a co-operative education component. These co-op work experiences allow students the opportunity to gain real-world work experience related to their field of study while earning course credit.

When you are in a co-op term, you are allowed to work full-time to fulfill your program requirements.

Your study permit will be issued at the airport.

Check your study permit when it is issued and make sure that your client information (like the spelling of your name) is correct.

If you have a spouse, common-law partner, or child(ren), you should apply for their permits when you apply for yours.

A Study Permit is your official permission to study in Canada. You can find out more by visiting the Citizenship and Immigration Canada web site. Obtaining your Study Permit can take 1 – 6 months, so start the application process as soon as possible.

You can apply for the Study Permit through the nearest Canadian Visa Office (or online if you are eligible for this option). A processing fee of $125 applies. (U.S. citizens can apply at the Port of Entry upon arrival in Canada – no advance application is required). You may need to undergo a medical examination. Please consult the Immigration Medical Exam section of Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website for details.

Students from certain countries may also require a Temporary Entry Visa (also known as an “Entry Visa”) to enter Canada.

Students in programs of study with mandatory co-op terms must obtain a Co-op Work Permit (along with their Study Permit prior to arriving in Canada. Students can expect delays if they wait until they arrive in Canada). Please refer to the Student Work Permit section.
